Biography

Dr. Sun Yuan is a distinguished pediatric hematology specialist and currently serves as the President of Beijing Kyoto Children's Hospital. As a founding member of the hospital, she established the Hematology-Oncology Department from scratch in 2015 and led it to become one of the largest pediatric hematology centers in northern China. With nearly 30 years of clinical experience, she has made groundbreaking advancements in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for children with high-risk, relapsed/refractory hematological diseases and congenital immunodeficiencies.

Under her leadership, as of May 2025, the hospital has successfully completed nearly 900 hematopoietic stem cell transplantation procedures and over 2,000 pediatric congenital heart disease surgeries. Dr. Sun assumes dual roles as a clinician and administrator, committed to integrating academic rigor, patient-centered care, and innovative hospital management. She places special emphasis on disciplinary construction and academic development, pursuing the development philosophy of "medicine, education, research, service, and capital."

Clinical Focus

Dr. Sun specializes in diagnosing and treating complex pediatric hematological and immune system diseases, with primary research directions including: 

  1. Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT): Focused on HSCT for various pediatric hematological diseases and primary immunodeficiencies. She has performed sibling fully matched, unrelated peripheral blood stem cell, unrelated cord blood, haploidentical, and autologous cord blood transplants for high-risk, refractory/relapsed leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, various immunodeficiencies, inborn errors of metabolism, primary and EB virus-associated hemophagocytic syndromes. She completed China's first autologous cord blood transplant for severe aplastic anemia.

  2. Disease Areas: Expertise in diagnosis and treatment of various pediatric hematological and immune system diseases, including: all types of anemia, hemorrhagic diseases, pediatric hematological malignancies, and congenital immunodeficiencies.• Particular proficiency in HSCT for pediatric hematological diseases and congenital immunodeficiencies, with rich clinical experience in treating conditions such as pediatric hemophagocytic syndrome, chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection, high-risk/refractory leukemia, primary immunodeficiencies, inborn errors of metabolism, bone marrow failure diseases, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes.
